The origin of the Dragon Boat Festival
The Dragon Boat Festival (the fifth day of the fifth lunar month) began in the Warring States Period to commemorate the patriotic poet Qu Yuan. According to legend, after Qu Yuan drowned himself in the river, the people rowed boats to rescue him and threw rice into the water to prevent fish from eating him, which gave rise to the two major customs of "dragon boat racing" and "eating rice dumplings".
